Province located in the western region of Cuba and that limits, to the north with the province of City of Havana and the Straits of Florida, to the south with the gulf of Bataban๓, to the east with Slaughters and the west with Pine of the River. Its area of 5 725.6 km2 locates it in the twelfth place between the provinces of the country, and occupies the eighth place by its population that of 677 125 inhabitants (1996) distributed in nineteen municipalities. One is located in theHabana-Matanzas plain, heights of Rattan field-Magruga-Coliseo and the heights of Habana-Matanzas. It has a waved relief and its peak altitude is of 317m. Its hydrography is represented by the rivers Canasํ, Jibacoa, Jaruco, Santa Cruz, Artemisa, Chaplaincies and the dams Pedroso, Canasํ and Jaruco. In this province agriculture is developed, specially the sugar cane and cultures like grains, tubercles and vegetables. The cattles operate themselves and pig and the poultry keeping is developed. In the field of the industry in addition to the sugar bowl and nourishing the others as the drink fishery and production and licores play an important role in the national economy.
