Capital of Provence, Marseille luxuriates in the fine climate of that famous province, where a hot sun adds life to the olive and the vine. What keeps Marseilles mild is its Mediterranean seaside location. Summer heat is mitigated by sea breezes. Winter freezes are very rare, though wind chill can keep the actual temperatures pretty low. The Mistral, a wind from the northeast, creates some asperity. Occurring through the year, and sometimes unpleasant, its gusts reach up to 60 km an hour in speed (35 miles an hour), and often trigger storms and rough seas.
