Palma de Mallorca (or just simply Palma) is the capital of the Balearic Islands and the economic and cultural hub of the island. It's located on the south coast of the island on the Bay of Palma and forms an important holiday resort and commercial port. In fact, Palma is, at the same time, the seat of the autonomous government of the Balearic Islands and the center for most of Majorca's hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs. Therefore, Palma is one of Spain's most important tourist destinations attracting visitors from all over the world.Tourists can visit and explore either Palma de Mallorca, the main centre, or the northwest coast with the Serra de Tramuntana mountain ranges, or the north and east coast beaches. Palma has a beautiful quarter marked by centuries of history. The cathedral, the Palace of Almudaina, the Bellver castle, "El Puig de San Pere", the fish market, "La Lonja" and Plaza Mayor are some of the amazing places where tourists will have to stop. Fishing boats, pine groves and palm trees complement the most beautiful monuments. The coastal landscape of Palma is filled with coves, beautiful beaches and surprising cliffs.In 1983 the Balearic Islands became one of Spain's autonomous regions, with Palma de Mallorca its capital. Today Palma, famous for its beaches and beautiful sea, is one of the most popular tourist destination in Spain.
